In this presentation, the speaker will introduce the TACO assistance system—a wearable, haptic communication system that conveys social and emotional information via vibrations. I will present three different prototype versions, which differ in terms of shape, how they are worn, and their interaction concept, and explain how they were developed in collaboration with blind and visually impaired users. A central focus is on direct feedback from users: their experiences, wishes, and criticism are actively incorporated into the research and development process and have a significant influence on the further development of the system. Participants will gain insights into the current status of the prototypes and research, can contribute their own perspectives, and thus contribute to the design of an assistance system suitable for everyday use. No prior knowledge is required.

Marie Heart

Marie Herz is pursuing a doctorate in human-computer interaction with a focus on assistive, haptic interfaces for blind and visually impaired people. In her research, she develops and evaluates the TACO assistance system, a wearable, tactile communication system for nonverbal communication of emotions and social, nonverbal information. Her work is based on extensive qualitative and quantitative studies with affected individuals and combines user-centered design, inclusive research, and prototyping and evaluation of assistive technologies.
