Human genetics now plays a central role in the diagnosis of hereditary retinal and other eye diseases. Genetic diagnostic techniques have advanced rapidly over the past 20 years. Today, molecular genetic testing allows for a genetic diagnosis in the majority of patients with such conditions. This will be illustrated in the lecture using the largest group of such conditions: inherited retinal diseases (IRD). The presentation will focus in particular on – Inheritance and recurrence risks – Options for cases that remain unresolved despite genetic testing – Implications for therapy and prevention – Practical procedures regarding genetic counseling and testing (informed consent forms, referral forms, etc.) – Syndromes: diagnosis, exclusion
