A new environment, unfamiliar buildings and streets. Where do I need to go? What’s
even nearby? And where am I in relation to it?
Navigating the spaces of digital games deprives people with
visual impairments, in particular, of their usual orientation techniques. Whereas previously
environmental sounds, the texture of the pavement, and, where applicable,
assistive technologies provided a sense of security, most games offer a purely visual
representation of their worlds.
To ensure that people with visual impairments can participate equally in these worlds,
games must provide them with suitable navigation options. In
this presentation, various assistive technologies for navigation in digital games,
as well as various accessible games across a wide range of genres, will be introduced.
